SUMMARY:"Tower of Flints" Team Bughouse
DESCRIPTION:The Menlo Park Chess Club will hold its first team Bughouse event April 6th\, a follow-on to our Team Blitz tournament and part of a long-promised experiment to see if the team format works for our membership. The tournament will consist of sixteen teams of two players in a 4-round Swiss with a G/5 time control and free entry. More information about Bughouse rules and strategy may be found here. \nSign up individually using the Register button\, above\, and indicate your desired team member if you have one (optional). Given the fixed team nature of this event there is little flexibility where the number of participants is concerned\, so if you wish to play please sign up early. That said\, please do not register if you are on the fence about playing on the 6th\, as nothing causes more swirl in a team event than late withdrawals or\, worse\, no-shows. \nShortly after registrations close team rosters and pairings will be shared with all participants. If you need to withdraw for any reason please let the tournament director know as soon as possible\, so that a replacement player may be found and the teams rebalanced\, as necessary. The first round will begin promptly at 7:00pm so please arrive by 6:45 Thursday to check in. Our Tournament Rules Summary will be followed for this tournament with the lone exception that we will observe clock move rather than touch move (the distinction will be shared before the start of the first round). Please send any questions or comments to info@menloparkchess.club and we look forward to seeing you at at this event!

The tournament will consist of eight teams of four players in a 3-round Swiss with a G/10 d/3 time control and free entry. The Chess960 starting positions to be used will be shared at the beginning of each round. \nSign up individually using the Register button\, above\, and teams will be crafted by the tournament director\, with the avowed goal of making the event as equitable as possible where rating and/or skill level are concerned. Given the fixed team nature of this event there is little flexibility where the number of participants is concerned\, so if you wish to play please sign up early. That said\, please do not register if you are on the fence about playing on the 30th\, as nothing causes more swirl in a team event than late withdrawals or\, worse\, no-shows.

SUMMARY:"Tower of Flints" Team Blitz #1
DESCRIPTION:The Menlo Park Chess Club will hold two consecutive team blitz tournaments March 9th and 16th\, part of a long-promised experiment to see if this format works for our membership. The first event on March 9th will offer free entry and will include either eight teams of 4 players (32)\, six teams of six players (36) or ten teams of four players (40)\, depending upon the number of registrations\, with a bias for the middle option. The second event on March 16th may include a $5 entry fee\, all of which will be returned to the top two or three teams as prizes. If there are six or eight teams the tournament format will be round robin (five or seven rounds\, respectively). If there are ten teams the format will be a five-round Swiss. The time control is tentatively G/5 d/2 and may be slightly shorter if there are seven rounds (G/4 d/2). \nSign up individually using the Register button\, above\, and teams will be crafted using a patent-pending\, proprietary algorithm known only to ChatGPT\, with the avowed goal of making the event as equitable as possible where rating and/or skill level are concerned. Given the fixed team nature of this event there is little flexibility where the number of participants is concerned\, so if you wish to play please sign up early. That said\, please do not sign up if you are on the fence about playing next Thursday\, as nothing causes more swirl in a team event than late withdrawals or\, worse\, no-shows. \nShortly after registrations close team rosters and pairings will be shared with all participants. If you need to withdraw for any reason please let the tournament director know as soon as possible\, so that a replacement player may be found and the teams rebalanced\, as necessary. The US Chess Rules of Blitz Chess will be followed for both events with the lone exception that we will observe clock move rather than touch move (the distinction will be shared before the start of the first round). SUMMARY:Burgess Park Double-Blitz G/3+2
DESCRIPTION:Based on conversations at the club last week and on a few online interactions over the past couple days it seems that another Blitz tournament is what people most wish to partake of this week\, so we’ll hold another free\, unrated double-blitz tournament of four rounds and a G/3+2 time control. A double-blitz event entails playing two games with each opponent\, one as black and one as white. The tournament will begin promptly at 7pm so please register and check in before that time\, if at all possible. Prizes will be yet more gift certificates to Kepler’s or Feldman’s Books.

SUMMARY:Fischer Random (Chess960) Tournament
DESCRIPTION:The Menlo Park Chess Club will hold its first Fischer Random (Chess 960) tournament Wednesday\, September 14th\, beginning at 7pm sharp. The event will be unrated and will occur over one evening with a time control of G/8 d/2\, there will be three or four rounds depending upon the number of entries\, entry is free and prizes will be gift certificates to Feldman’s Books in Menlo Park. \nThe starting positions used for the event will be announced before the beginning of each round in an attempt to rein in those who might overprepare. Everyone is encouraged to play in this tournament\, even if you’ve never played a game of Chess960 before. As long as you can play ‘regular’ chess with a clock and understand the castling eccentricities involved with this variant you’ll be fine\, though some may suggest playing a game or two on one of the online chess services to get a feel for Chess960. \nPlease register ahead of time using the button on this page so we have some idea how many people to expect — you may cancel your registration at any time.

SUMMARY:MPCC Surfeit of Blitz Marathon: 3+0
DESCRIPTION:The Menlo Park Chess Club seeks to answer a simple question: How much blitz chess is too much? Over four consecutive Wednesday evenings in July we will hold four separate unrated blitz tournaments of ever-shortening time controls (5+3\, 5+0\, 3+2\, 3+0)\, each with free entry and modest cash prizes. Where this event differs from most\, however\, is that players may optionally contribute $5 to an overall prize fund\, to be awarded based on one’s performance through all four individual blitz tournaments (the marathon). \nEvery dollar contributed to the overall prize fund will be returned in marathon prizes. Additionally\, any ties for cash prizes in the individual tournaments will see that money placed in the overall/marathon prize fund\, to bolster existing and add new place prizes. For example\, if two people score a perfect 4-0 to tie for first in the 3+0 event and one person takes sole third with 3.5-0.5\, $40 will be added to the overall prize fund (the 1st-2nd tie\, $25 + $15) while the person in 3rd place would take home $10 (see Prizes\, below). If three or more people tie for first place then the entire $50 (1st-3rd prizes) will be added to the overall/marathon prize fund. The same applies to the under-17 prizes. \nNote that each individual tournament is a standalone event and you may play in 1\, 2\, 3 or 4 of these tourneys as you please\, with no obligation to chip in $5 unless you wish to take part in the marathon. Details follow: \n\nFormat: Four separate Swiss-system tournaments in one section over four consecutive Wednesday evenings\nDates: July 6th\, 13th\, 20th and 27th — games begin at 7:00pm\nControl: July 6th\, 5+3; July 13th\, 5+0; July 20th\, 3+2; July 27th\, 3+0\nRounds (#): July 6th\, 4; July 13th\, 4; July 20th\, 5; July 27th\, 5\nEntry Fee: $0 (MPCC will sponsor the prizes)\nPrizes: Each event will offer 1st\, $25; 2nd\, $15; 3rd\, $10; Under-17 1st\, $15\, 2nd\, $10\nTies: If there is a tie for any cash prize the associated funds will be rolled into the overall purse mentioned above (yes\, this is unusual but we think it may prove interesting and\, given the entry fee is $0\, there should be little complaint)\nByes: Zero-point byes available any round\nRegister: Click the Register button\, above\nBoards\, sets and clocks will be provided by the Menlo Park Chess Club (bring a clock if you own one)\nU.S. Chess Rules for Blitz Chess will be followed for all play in this event\nFor more information please send email to info@menloparkchess.club or tweet @MenloParkChess\nJoin our Facebook group to stay abreast of future club tournaments and events
